BD007 | Formats: Vinyl, Digital & Ltd. Edition | Release date: May 26th 2017
Total runtime: 27:56 | Tracks: 5 | Genre: Electronica, Avantgarde, Experimental, Generative Music

After several productions framed by physical space and its acoustical phenomena, the next release by the Berlin-based label “bohemian drips” takes a broader approach. “Iván Paz – Visions of Space” is a metaphysical exploration of both, virtual and physical space, determined by algorithms for sound generation in a live coding context. The different objects are controlled through parameters, which become the means of interaction between the improviser and the code. The digital outcome determined by these algorithms was then re-amplified and/or processed through electrical and physical structures, such as binaural microphones and the stairs of an old factory, to achieve its final spatial and electronic quality, in an effort to merge code and physical space.

A limited edition includes USB sticks with a self booting operating system. Once loaded, it will create music based on the algorithms that were used to create this record. The USB stick is not included in the regular vinyl edition.

INFORMATION

“Visions of Space” is a study, conceived by working with algorithms for sound generation in a live coding context. The different objects are controlled through parameters, which become the means of interaction between the improviser and the code. Through the different combinations of values, one travels across the range of possible sound outputs. Thus, as in musical compositions, the pieces can be thought as successive combinations in time. This idea was the seed. The pieces were born from this exploration, conceived as a process through which the material was chosen. Sometimes an algorithm, designed for this purpose, structured the different combinations into the chosen perceptual categories for their use during performance.

Born in Mexico, Iván Paz lives and works in Barcelona. With a background in physics and mathematics, and a constant relationship with music and sound, his interests are centered around science, art and technology and how their interaction creates new aesthetic and conceptual thinking directions. His current research explores artificial intelligence methodologies, like parameter exploration and knowledge acquisition, as a mean for composition, specifically applied in real-time programming (live coding) and algorithmic music. His work is framed within a free and open source philosophy, which considers the act of programming a social and political expression.

The limited vinyl edition of “Visions of Space” will includes the LP and a USB stick with a self booting operating system. Once loaded, it will create music based on the algorithms that were used to create this record. A manual will be provided on order.
